In a fire in Mount Mercer 8 months ago, 650 2 year old wethers on this property were killed. According to the owner, Mr Parker, he considered himself “lucky it was the wethers and not ewes because we haven’t really lost any genetic breeding stock but still they would have been our best wool cutters this year”.

We are continually told how famers care about their animals like members of their own family. Concern is certainly shown here for the animals in so far as the money they bring in but not for the animals as individuals. For theses farmers the primary concern is never the animals themselves but rather the money that can be made from them.

650 lives lost but not to worry though as their “insurance covered everything”.
